Confidentiality

Your privacy is a foundational part of the therapeutic relationship. Everything you share in counseling is held in strict confidence. I do not disclose any information about your sessions to outside parties without your written consent.

Limits of Confidentiality

There are specific situations where I am legally and ethically required to break confidentiality to protect safety. These include:

  • Imminent risk of harm to yourself: If I believe you are at imminent risk of suicide or serious self-harm, I may need to take steps to ensure your safety, which could include contacting emergency services or a designated emergency contact.
  • Imminent risk of harm to others: If I believe you pose a serious and imminent threat to another person, I may need to warn that person and/or contact authorities.
  • Suspected abuse of a child, elder, or vulnerable adult: I am a mandated reporter and must report suspected abuse to the appropriate authorities.
  • Court orders: If a court of law issues a subpoena or order for records, I may be legally required to comply.

In any of these situations, I will discuss the matter with you before taking action whenever possible, and I will share only the minimum information necessary to ensure safety or comply with the law.
